The novel tells the story of a British officer, Harry Feversham, who resigns from the Royal North Surrey Regiment just before the 1882 expedition to Egypt to end the rising of Colonel Ahmed Orabi. He finds he is accused of cowardice by three of his best friends and his fiancée. Each of these people gives him a white feather to signify his cowardice. His best friend then seeks to be in a relationship with his ex-fiance.

The story follows the true reasons Harry resigned as well as adventures that help him find himself but also see the world and those around him in a way not thought possible.  This is an amazing story that inspired many film adaptations including a cinema hit starring Heath Ledger
