I am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang | 1932 Film | Drama-Crime movie

This 1932 pre code film was nominated for three Academy awards. It was based on Mervyn Leroy's true autobiography about being wrongfully sentenced to a chain gang.

Plot. Sargent James Allen ( Paul Muni) returns from WW 1 and is looking for work when he unwillingly is caught up in a robbery and is wrongfully imprisoned.  This film shows how he escaped and became a successful engineer only to be held romantically captive to a women who knows his secret and threatens to turn him in. 

Eventually Allen turns himself in on a plea-bargain for a short sentence but then is denied his deal by the state after serving. Allen then escaped a second time. 

The cinematography and story was excellent even by modern day standards.
